February 1 - What’s so great about February?

Throughout the month of February, I’ve decided to try two things:
- wear red, purple, or pink each day, without repeating
- write one blog post each day

I’m off to a good start with the first, so here’s my attempt at the second. :)

February is my favorite month. Could it be because it’s my birthday month? I’m sure that’s a part of it, but also a lot of other important events happened during February. For instance, my first real relationship began on the 17th. I got my grad school offer, NODA internship offer, and first job offer during the month. I came out to my parents in February. And of course, I can’t forget Valentine’s Day.

I know, I know - not everyone’s favorite holiday. Quite frequently, it’s among the most hated days for many people. But let me give you a new perspective on the day.

According to Wikipedia http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentine%27s_day (everyone’s favorite reliable source), “The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately 190 million valentines are sent each year in the US. Half of those valentines are given to family members other than husband or wife, usually to children. When you include the valentine-exchange cards made in school activities the figure goes up to 1 billion, and teachers become the people receiving the most valentines.[36] In some North American elementary schools, children decorate classrooms, exchange cards, and are given sweets. The greeting cards of these students sometimes mention what they appreciate about each other.”

The exchanging of Valentines doesn’t have to be about romantic, intimate love, but rather, could be centered around love and appreciation towards others. Specifically, Valentine’s Day can be a great opportunity to teach children about the importance of sharing love and appreciation with others, and with their educators.

So why not share the love?
